The mulch is becoming an increasingly useful thing that should not be missed in our garden. This time we want to help you decide which mulch is most suitable for your garden. It is definitely good to think about which ones are suitable for us before buying them. We are going to tell you, what are the advantages and disadvantages of individual types of mulchs. We will tell you more about the reasons why to use mulch at all and introduce you some of the most commonly used mats.

The advantages of the mulchs are:

·        moisture maintenance

·        Improved soil structure and vitality

·        Weed control

·        Fertilizing vegetables

·        Protection against erosion

·        Increased fertility

·        Protection from the sun heat

·        Reduced plant rot

·        Reduced soil temperature fluctuations

·        The fruits remain clean and isolated from disease

·        Prevent soil erosion

·        Improved aesthetic appearance of the garden

Mulch Types:

·        Bark (the most commonly used mulch that unfortunately takes away nitrogen from the soil).

·        Straw (the organic material we use especially where plants are transplanted. The disadvantage of this mulch is that under the straw like to live a lot of pests. In addition, this mulch makes the soil acidic)

·        Needles

·        Foil mulch (effective in controlling weeds, but under it snails like to breed. The mulch is not natural)

·        Crushed dry leaves (wind blows it, ensures no airiness of the soil)

·        Compost (an affordable mulch in which it can be planted and sown directly)

·        Sheep's wool (useful for transplanting plants, but very susceptible to pests)

·        Miscanthus is the most useful of all mulches , because unlike e.g. straw does not acidify the soil, it is the most absorbent of all mulchs that, due to its structure, even helps to repel snails… Miskantus is a completely natural raw material that does not contain any plant protection residues funds.

What should I look out for when using a mulch?

·        Before filling the mulch, loosen the soil and remove weeds

·        Use the mulch in warm weather as it works as an insulator and would keep this temperature in the ground cold. We want to have constantly warm soil to help us have a higher yield at the end.

·        If we use a wet mat, it can occur rot

·        If we have problems with voles in our garden, marbles, etc., even before applying the mulch, make sure to fill in the remains of plants, which these animals do not like. Eg. plants that smell like lemon help repel voles…

·        It is recommended to fill the mulch when plants already started to grow, as this allows them to come to the surface normally

·        If we use a dark mat, we need to be careful that this one does not touch the plant, as in warm weather this would cause burns on plants.

·        Do not use mulchs that stink of mold, sour, rot, etc.

In which season is it appropriate to use a mulch?

Most people use the mulch in the spring months and leave it until autumn. However, this is not the only time of year in which it is recommended to use a mulch. It is also recommended to use use it in winter, when we cover the ground with a mulch and prepare it for new season.
